The installation of a leaf screen to gutters can be effective in reducing routine maintenance. Despite marketing efforts by several manufacturers, there is no magic system which eliminates maintenance, nor is there a single product which works in every situation. Foliage, building location, roof pitch and aspect are contributing factors in determining the type of system and frequency of maintenance required.
Why do gutters clog? Apart from the debris which finds its way into the gutters, the major component of any gutter system is the size of the outlet or drain. A small opening will dam with debris much quicker than a large one. Large leaves will clog the drain quicker than small fir needles. Large volumes of materials, whether fir needles or leaves will quickly clog any system.
What damage can be done? Overflowing gutters can literally be carrying over a ton of water on a typical home, straining the fasteners and gradually causing them to loosen. Water damage to the structure, potential leaks into the home, rot and mildew are good reasons to maintain your gutter system.

| This photo shows a Gutter Screen in Action. Installed approximately two years prior, the homeowner was cleaning his gutters about three times per year. Although not cleaned since installation, the gutters remain working to full capacity. A quick spray with a garden hose through the screen would remove any sludge build up and blow off pine needles resting on top. |
What is the solution? The answer is to control the debris and to allow the rain water to keep the gutters clean. 1) Gutter screen: A screen installed on a gutter should filter out larger particles without impeding the water flow. Smaller particles entering the gutters will be flushed by the rain. 2) Large Outlet: A large outlet which will allow small debris to flow with water into the downpipe, without causing damming. (K-Style funnel outlet or aluminum flush outlet) 3) Leaf Catcher: The leaf catcher is installed at ground level for easy cleaning and filters out the smaller particles before entering the underground drains, which could cause more expensive maintenance issues.
